How to spot one
- ✓Impossibly long landing gear — it towers over other narrowbodies at the gate
- ✓Skinny 'pencil' fuselage with a proportionally huge fin
- ✓Big RB211/PW2000 nacelles that look borrowed from a widebody
- ✓Steep, fast climbs on departure are its signature party trick
Out of production since 2004 and still without a true replacement. The 757 is the hot rod of airliners — big engines on a slim fuselage give it thrust-to-weight numbers that let it launch out of short, hot, high runways that ground other jets, then cross the Atlantic. Delta, United and Icelandair keep passenger fleets alive while freight operators cherish the rest. Enthusiasts adore it; airlines still ask Boeing to build something as good.
