How to spot one

  • Dramatically raked, high-flex wings — in cruise they sweep up like a gull's
  • Sawtooth chevrons on the engine nacelle exhaust
  • Four-panel cockpit glass with no separate eyebrow windows
  • Smooth nose that blends straight into the fuselage — no cockpit 'step'

The first airliner built mostly from carbon fiber, and the one that changed how long-haul feels from the inside: a lower 6,000-ft cabin altitude, higher humidity, and huge electronically-dimmable windows because the composite hull can take the pressure. Its bleedless electric architecture and long thin-route economics spawned hundreds of new city pairs that never justified a bigger jet. The 787-9 on this site's board is the type's sweet spot.
